She burst out laughing. She couldn't help herself. She didn't think her best friend's story was supposed to be funny, but for some reason it really tickled her.
Mary hit her with the feather duster she was using to get cobwebs down from the ceiling and the corners of the dusty living room. "stop laughing!" Mary cried, but even she was cracking a little smile.
"I can't, I'm sorry" Ali said although she was calming down a little now "so, you wanted some shoes made?" she recounted.
"yes, and my shoemaker just started venting to me about all of his family life" she explained again "am I that calming a presence that people feel the need to vent all of their problems to me?" she asked, not expecting an answer.
Thunder boomed outside the window making both of them jump. "Looks like we're gonna be stuck here for a while," Ali said "I can't drive us home in that!"
"that's okay" Mary smiled putting down the duster and lowering herself to the floor, "we've got lots to do around here anyway".
the two girls were house renovators and they had been procrastinating this particular project for a while.
"it means our pizza won't get here though" Ali sighed
