"Karlie!" Screams the girls as the strange giant rat hybrids ascend on her friend.
Mina's screaming. Karlie struggles against the jungle's vines. The rats are tearing into her skin. There's a blinding flash of light, imitating from Mina, and the rat's scatter.
Pulling out her pocket knife, she cuts her way through the thick vines, rushing to Karlie's side. She's breathing, but barely. The wounds are shallow, and strangely not bleeding.
Blinking away her confusion, Mina pulls out alcohol and a needle and thread from her pack. She pours alcohol on the wound. Karlie moans. Ignoring it, she begins stitching up her wounds. Satisfied, she brings carries Karlie back to camp.
"Good heavens!" Exlaims the former church minister as they near camp. "What happened to her?"
"The rats did." Spits out Mina.
"I'm sure the lord had a reason for this, just stay calm and god will save her.
Mina snaps. "Cut the god crap! She's hurt! What good could come out of this?"
As Mina enters Karlie's tent, rain starts to pour, softly. Karlie loves rain. "Wake up you bastard..." She mumbles, setting the other girl on the floor.
The next morning Mina wakes to sunlight and a shake to the shoulder. It's Karlie, her eyes are wide.
"What happened? I remember the rats but..." She looks over herself. The wounds have vanished. Mina gapes at her.
"I... Did I get healing powers?"
"It's possible," Mina admits. "We don't know what the rats can do, but it's possible."
Mina's eyes narrow in concern. "But I have to know you're okay, repeat after me, My name's Mina, I'm... your friend. "That word didn't seem quite right.
Karlie rolls her eyes. "I know who you are Mina, I know who I am. How's everyone at camp."
Mina shrinks. "I may have yelled at him."
