Excerpt 2

I run a finger along the rough map, studying the worn paper. Gritting my teeth, I place a pin in one mountain before continuing. The pins in a pile on the table clink against each other.
In the corner, water runs as he washes his hands. The bar of soap smells like woodwork and worn fabric. It only helps me focus, phantom fiery red eyes staring back at me from the map. I drive a pin into another spot.
The eyes shift and change, still familiar, but of a different kind.
My father's blue eyes dance in front of my vision, tears forming at the edge of his eyes. He opens an unseen mouth and wails for help. My shoulders tense and I drive a pin into the paper once again. I blink rapidly. The eyes fade with the noise.
I grab a marker from the box on the table.
