Nothing but silence.
Lirin couldn't hear anything, not since the battle, not only had it taken his sons, it had taken his hearing too. Now, he was left with only the sound of his own thoughts to keep him company, and they weren't very reassuring.
Regardless, he pushed aside the depression and focused on the task at hand, studying the map. He needed to plan strategically for the battle ahead. They were trying to retake the city they had lost, and it appeared that the only place nearby without guards posted, was the shoemaker's store. They had to get to that shop, to retake what was theirs.
The invasion had caught everyone off guard, aliens had come, only a strike force for now, but the rest were quickly approaching on a meteor, just like a comic book. No one had been able to anticipate it, but it left them all scrambling.
His thoughts were once again interrupted by a tap on his shoulder, he was here, the driver. He had worked as a delivery driver for the corps previously, but now he smuggled resistance fighters where they needed to go.
Lirin was jostled into the back of the van and they got going. It was going to be a long ride, so he settled down in a corner, and sat on something. A soy sauce packet.
The sticky sauce was annoying, but it was when the side of the van was shot open that *really* ruined the trip.
"Kid" He said, despite not hearing it.
Then, he started shooting. They couldn't let them get her, Lara, the astronomer was their only hope, and so they fought with all they had. Spoiler alert, the earth survives.
