The soft light radiating from the TV filled the room and the myriad of voices preparing the live public announcement buzzed through the speakers.
"Katelin! Come inside!" Joseph called out the back door.
I rushed in, throwing my packet of seeds on the kitchen bench. I sat down on the edge of the sofa while Joseph switched the light off.
"Australia," The prime minister began, stepping behind the microphone. "It is with the greatest of sorrows that I announce, we are at war."
I gasped, looking over at Joseph. His head was in his hands and his back hunched. I tried to force myself to keep listening. I couldn't.
I reached for the remote and turned off the TV.
"Look, whatever this brings, we will get through it.
