Golden Knives Excerpt

I let out a breath through pursed lips.
"Sanda?" I call to the knock on the door, continuing to braid my hair as the door opens.
"Sorry to bother you," A deep voice sounds from the entrance. I tense, turning to face them. "The jewelry you ordered arrived," The guard hands me a white velvet box tied off with a bow. Tying off my hair, I move toward the man.
I furrow my brow, accepting the package. "I didn't order anything, but thanks anyways," My tongue clicks against teeth.
The velvet fabric melts against my hands, in stark contrast to the long forgotten oil trapped under my nails that I have long since given up on removing. Just another memory of my past life. I swallow a trip back to my home, forcing my thoughts behind me. The hinges slide as I open them.
A pearl necklace stares back at me, white chain knotted between each pearl. The ivory color swims in the black interior of the box. With a blink, I set the box down on the desk, replacing it with the mug of black coffee I asked for.
Warmth spreads over my fingers, the wrapper of my past chocolate
