War

"A message! A message from the King!"

Mira's hands stilled on the shirt she was holding, the needle and thread nearly slipping through her fingertips as she strained her neck to look out the grimy orphanage window.

The torn shirt forgotten, she pressed her hands against the counter top. Using her fingertips, she cleared away a small circle on the glass through which to look through.

A crowd had gathered in the cobble-stoned streets. Mira recognized the crier to be Edolf, the lighthouse keeper famed for falling asleep on duty and causing three shipwrecks. She frowned. He lived nearly ten miles away - what on earth was he doing in the heart of Middlebury? She leaned in closer, trying to make out what he was saying.

"...It's just been announced. It's true, I swear it." Murmurs trickled through the sea of villagers. "We're at war! The King has declared against Claudach. Soldiers are marching as we speak."

War? Mira shook her head. That was unthinkable. Improbable. Utterly... possible. Tensions had been running high lately, and they hadn't had a true fight in years. The coffers were chock full. Their armies were strong and hearty.

But war?

What would that mean for the orphanage? What would that mean for Mira?
