Jasper hears something strange at the foot of his bed. It's an innocent creak, barely louder than a footstep, but he hears it all the same. It's pitch black outside. Not even a street light is there to light up the gloom. So Jasper sits up and slides off the bed to go turn on the light switch. He feels around his desk, looking for the switch. His hand brushes against the clamp fastened to the side of his desk that he uses to store his headphones and cords. The workspace is relatively messy, but he still tries to keep it organized when he can. He fumbles for a moment before locating the switch and flipping it on. Light floods the room and Jasper blinks as his eyes adjust to the brightness. He blinks and looks around the room, searching for the source of the strange sound. He then hears a low rumble outside. He walks to the window by his bed and peeks through the blinds. Outside, a small bright dot is streaking toward the horizon. Jasper frowns. He hadn't remembered hearing about a comet in the news.
He resumes searching the room. He steps around his bed a bit, testing the sounds of the wood flooring. His eyes land upon the whip hanging next to his doorway. It usually hangs in a tight coil, but now the end is hanging down and nearly brushing the floor. Jasper's heart quickens.
