It's been a while

It's cold. My legs feel stiff, my fingertips frozen and my breath coming out in short breaths visible in the cold night air. I've just had a rough day and do not want to stay outside any longer. I knock on the door, sharply, and only twice before it swings open and I'm greeted with a bright smile.
"Kai, good to see you. I've just been dusting the bookshelf. Come in, quick. I don't want you to freeze." My best and oldest friend grabs my arm and yanks me inside before I can even speak. He sits me in front of the fireplace before he picks up his feather duster and continues dusting the shelves. I bask in the warm of the flickering fire.
It's good to be home. Well, it's good to be in Malik's home. I remember spending nights here, on Christmas, sipping hot chocolates as we read books or play blackjacks. He always managed to beat me. I think he's been cheating this whole time but I have no proof. None.
I miss nights like that; laughing, kissing, hugging, reading. I miss it all. But ever since I became a bounty hunter I've just been taking job after job after job, and we haven't had any time together. Until now of course.
