The Workman

by Anonymous | Score: 2500

A workman stared at the bench in front of him. His leathered hands gripped the delicately engraved wood, worn over the decades. His hair was grey, it was time for him to pass the table onto his granddaughter. But he was not ready. The decorated wood held many secrets, including the death of his wife years ago. He knew it was not an accident that killed her. He moved a clamp off of it, placed there by his ignorant son thinking it was simply a pretty workbench. The craftsman's skillful eyes traced over the surface of the wood, looking for any cracks, blemishes, that might hide a secret drawer, anything. His eyes caught on a crack that wove itself through the designs. He grasped it and pulled, the wood creaking as it revealed a hidden drawer.
The man paled, looking as if he had seen a ghost. His heart skipped a beat and he pulled out a letter, yellowed with age.
