The Plane's Letter

by Zoe | Score: 3300

The sudden know at the door startled her. She got up from the couch and walked to the door. A small, thin package lay on the doorstep. It was light and the girl brought it inside. She lay it on the counter and opened it. Inside was a wooden case, engraved with forest scenes.
She opened the case and inside was a thin blade with a leather handle. The blade shone in the kitchen light and the girl could see ancient letters scattered across. Her mother, an economist, came in and looked at the knife.
That was my great-grandfather's, she said, I haven't seen it in a long time. He died in an airplane crash 20 years ago. Why he didn't send it before is beyond me.
A slip of paper lay on the velvet interior. The girl picked it up and started to read.
The date in the corner said it was sent in 12-3-97. Twenty years ago to the date. In the letter, the grandfather talked about the people on Plane 828. A miserable sailor, a tech geek carrying a computer, a mother and her son.  The girl and her mother read the letter in the kitchen. Tears glistened on the woman's cheeks.
