You've never seen a bastard orphan more in need of a break. My fingers were placed over the keys, shaking. I was becoming a little delirious; the notes I tried to type weren't coming out right. My shoulders were heaving, my lungs stuttering with the effort of taking another breath. And sure, maybe it wasn't the best idea to stay up for weeks at a time trying to complete my Master's, but then again, I had never been good at giving myself a break. I felt a hand on my shoulder as I tried to type out a new song. I flailed in the smallest bit of panic before a voice, smooth as could be, reached me. "Love," it said. "Come to bed." I shook my head, trying to shake the sleepiness out with it. "I can't," I breathed. "Just one more song. Please?" Mikey sighed. He was getting up early to go to his new job, I knew, as a traffic warden. He had caught me. "Xio," he tried. "It's time to sleep. When was the last time you slept?"
"Mikey," I replied. "Don't worry." I got up with a trembling, bitter body, and stumbled to the table. I supported myself on shaking arms, picking through last night's mail. "What's this?"
A red envelope, addressed to me, fell from the pile. It was from some Jared. I picked it open, my nails brittle from having chewed on them all day and night. It included a picture of a turtle. Something, something, something, about something, about something. I hung my head. The words were swimming on the page. I couldn't read it even if I wanted to. Mikey came up behind me, footsteps extra loud so he wouldn't scare me. "Love." There were tears in his words. "Come back to bed." His bangle bracelet clanked against mine.
Suddenly, aliens invaded. I think. Or maybe it was our upstairs neighbor getting his coffee.
"I have to go to work, I have to- Xio," he begged. "Xio, please go to bed. I can't- I can't stand it anymore Xio. Please."
It wasn't up to me.
I knew it wasn't up to me.
But Mikey didn't know that, did he? He didn't realize that-
Oh, it didn't matter anymore. Nothing much did. I blinked, almost falling asleep in the moment between breaths. my chest ached with labor. I began to slip, to slip, to slip, to slip. And there was Mikey, to catch me. Mikey always caught me. He picked me up, the warmth of his body all too relaxing, and led me to bed.
"I love you," he whispered. "And I cannot anymore."
"I love you. And I cannot anymore."
I love you. And I cannot anymore.
He laid me down, on my side of the bed, next to all my witchy things; my crystals, my wishbone. I picked it up, turning it over in my calloused hands. It was so smooth, so calming to touch again a
