The Eyes in the Bushes

I stared at what seemed like a set of eyes that appeared to be following me from out of the window. I was torn between checking outside and leaving the thought alone as I stood there, frozen. The eyes blinked and then narrowed. I could have sworn the temperature of the air around me dropped. I took a step back and grabbed the first thing I touched, which happened to be the tongs that were sitting in a bowl of salad on the kitchen counter. I threw open the window to see what was going on but the second I did the eyes vanished. I looked around and jabbed at the bushes with the tongs in vain. There was nothing there. I sighed and dropped into a chair by the open window. Was I hallucinating? Was I losing my mind? Did I have schizophrenia? I wanted to find out but I had no idea how. The eyes in the darkness seemed too vivid to be my imagination, but they had disappeared without a trace. I sat there thinking for much longer than I needed to before shivering. I realized that I had left the window open and went to close it.
