A news feed catches Aun’s attention as it scrolls off of the bottom of his AR glasses. The Bank of CRISPR was robbed last night on earth. This is worrisome. Because there are two sections to this particular bank. A public facing section where people can freeze their DNA,  and embryos for future use. It had originally started with patients undergoing chemotherapy. But The BOC also has a government vault where the latest CRISPR stem cells are stored. The ones that had reached a viable branch from the main stem cell and could be deployed when needed.

There is no mention of which vault was robbed in the news. Aun could not think off hand if he had any connections in the DNA banking sector back on earth who might be able to give him the inside scoop.

Absentmindedly, Aun reaches for the box of virtual markers on his desktop and starts to doodle. It’s a nervous tick. One that he had left over when he was a pen and paper Bullet Journalist.

He finds himself sketching a stylized letter Z. Which then morphs into a mind map with bubbled words emerging: zebra, Zulu, zenith.

Aun’s mind drifts randomly (thanks to his ADD) to a job fair interview where there was a curious careers advisor who had made such a big deal of Aun doodling during the session with him. Almost making an assertion that Aun would amount to nothing much if he did not follow the social norms of business interviews.

Well, here he was now. Responsible for Space Station III’s IT infrastructure. That surely proved the career counselor wrong.

The news feed had moved on to an open piece with a cynical curator who was known to sensationalize the fear that the meteor approaching earth in the next 30 years was in fact on a collision course and all art needed to be taken off world. Aun flicked the screen off.

A soft whirring of the air conditioner kicked in and Aun felt a draft down his neck. His V neck sweater, shockingly verdant, did not seem to keep the cold out. On another vid screen, a baby cried as a mom was being interviewed about her DNA that was stored in the CRISPR bank. S
