Neptune's Bakery

by Susmita Ramani | Score: 5150

Neptune Markeson had just had a world-changing idea: after many years of baking school, it was time for him to open his own bakery -- and the gimmick would be that the frosting would be at the bottom. Decorations? Also on the bottom. If people wanted a Cinderella figurine on their cake, it would be at the bottom of the cake, with the frosting -- like a treasure hunt, the very premise of Cracker Jack and cereal box toys of yore.

He hired his best friend Bernie, a stoic building laborer, to build the bakery, brick by brick, and include state-of-the-art ovens. Once or twice a brick fell onto Bernie's foot, but as he was stoic, he barely murmured about it.

Finally, the big day came to open the bakery. Because his massive neon sign hadn't arrived yet, Neptune got out a box of markers and wrote, "Neptune's Bakery - Just Opened! Cakes with Jelly, Jam and Frosting on the Bottom!" Before ten in the morning, there was a line of customers wrapped three times around the block. The Jameson twins, John and Jack, got into a fight because they were so antsy for sugar, each giving the other a black eye.

Then a little girl burst out of the bakery and spoke up. "Neptune says all samples today are free!"

First the Jameson twins were appeased by upside-down jam cakes, then, gradually (by about noon), world peace was achieved.

The following week, Neptune had an order to fill for a grandiose, 22-story wedding cake. He called in a respected craftsperson to help with the structural elements, ending by using a pair of tongs to put realistic-looking ceramic figurines of the bride and groom on the cake's top.

At the wedding, things were going swimmingly...until, during the speeches, there was a strange noise...and the entire cake creaked loudly and swayed perilously. Everyone screamed.

One of the guests, a warmhearted bailiff, saved the day with a candy wrapper.
