Aaron stared at the wall, bouncing a tennis ball against it occasionally. He was bored stiff. School was over, but summer hadn't really begun yet. He couldn't think of anything else to do.
His mom put her head around his bedroom door, knocking on the frame. "Hey, you doing all right?" When Aaron nodded, she continued, "I'm making chicken for dinner tonight. If you're bored, you could head on down to the library and grab a book."
Aaron groaned. "A book? Really?"
His mom nodded. "Yes, a book. It would do you good to read once in a while," she reprimanded with a smile. She waved her tongs at him. "Don't say I didn't give you a good suggestion, though."
She disappeared from his door, and Aaron went back to staring blankly at the wall. He hated to admit it, but his mother was probably right about reading. He stood up with a sigh, then grabbed his backpack from its spot on the wall, running into the upstairs hallway. Ignoring the stairs, he jumped onto the banister and slid down. He pulled open the door and walked down the street, waving to a group of his friends. The library was only half a block away, so it was only a few minutes before he arrived at the entry steps. Two massive marble lions stood to the sides of the staircase. Aaron remembered that he had been scared of the lions when he was younger. Now, he strode through the middle of them. Wandering into the middle of the library, Aaron pulled out a book at random. He walked over to a checkout booth and scanned his card, then the book. He waved to the librarian again on his way out
