Beeping Machine

by Jennings Alverson | Score: 1600

The machines are supposed to beep. He watched enough movies about characters who get injured, so he knows the heart monitors beep.

They aren't beeping, but he can see the green lines go up and down, spiking to the beat of his heart.

The doctor's mouths move. He can't hear the words, and he wonders if it is because he is too far away to listen, or if it has anything to do with the unsettling silence.

His mother is crying. He doesn't understand why, but she comes up to him and hugs him tight and he doesn't stop her. The only reason he knows she cries is because tears run down her face.

His father looks at him with sadness, eyes shining. He moves forward, a notepad in hand and hands it to him.

The words make his heart stop, his world stop spinning.

"You are deaf." They aren't the only words written down, but those are the ones that call to him.
