The Flame in the Flood

Eric watched his little boat sink to the bottom of the river running through his neighborhood.  When he had started this boat race, the sky had been clear.  Thin wispy clouds began to sneak their way across the sky a few minutes later.  He noticed them as playful shadows moving across the ground - he had no idea that they were carrying the deluge that was now falling on his head.
Eventually a persistent flashing of red lights caught Eric's attention.  The glitters of color dancing on the rippling, burbling water at his feet.  After a bit, he felt a presence behind him.  When he turned to look, he saw a fireman in full uniform, the water rolling off his hat like a waterfall.  He smiled at Eric as he kneeled in front of him and ruffled his drenched hair.  The fireman reached down and picked up a forgotten comic book that lay nearby, and pressed it in to Eric's hand.  The soggy pages draped over his hand like an overcooked noodle.  Suddenly there was a distinctly odd cracking noise behind the kindly fireman - they both turned to
