The man woke up from the bed shaking. He looked at the clock. 4 AM. His head was pounding from the worst headache he'd ever had in his life. Still shaking. What was happening? It took a bit for the world to congeal through the fog of cocktails consumed only a few hours earlier. San Francisco. Happy hour with a colleague. Running into the colleague's acquaintances. A club. Why was he in a club?

By this point he thought he'd figured out the shaking. Still, how common were earthquakes in SF? Was this a reasonable guess? He sat up and began unbuttoning the dress shirt he'd passed out in. Why was in a club?
It wasn't unusual for Alex to drink like this on business trips, even this late into his thirties, but something felt unique about last night, although he couldn't put his finger on what it was through fog of his brain. He had a palpable sense of dread as he rose to move to the bathroom. The earthquake had mercifully subsided, but there was no chance he was going back to sleep before emptying his bladder and finding some water.
