Creature in the rafts

by Red | Score: 2700

Desmond breathed in, short; ragged. The room was heavy with sulfur and debris. There was a crack in his safety goggles, a chasm in the middle of the right lens. He coughed roughly - once, twice. The third hitched with an ugly rattling in his chest. Breath catching; halting to a stumble before another violent cough brings with it an ugly clot of red in his shaking, ready palm. Everything was coated in grime. Dirt and smoke. The air turned black all around him; suffocating. Something wicked in the rafters peered down at him with bright eyes. He could feel the press of its gaze at the back of his neck; mingled with sweat. Not like this. It was never supposed to be like this. The explosion left behind it a void of sound. Uncomfortable shifting of what was left around him. Above him, the eyes moved. Circling, waiting. Watching through the thickness of the air. Desmond breathed in, and found himself choking on panic. It was iron on his tongue. Harsh. A memory flit past him - so quick he could almost ignore the sting of the thought. They'd told him he would never work again. They told him he had no chance. They told him that he was a fool, and a fool he was. The coughing turned softly into laughter. His shoulder shook with laughter, disbelief as he stared down at his own blood in his hands. The creature in the rafter shifted, perched, licked its parched lips. Not like this. Not like this. Desmond looked up; caught the creature's eyes. Not like this, but it would do just as well. Desmond raised his palm, and the creature obeyed.
